market-auction · 2026-04-26

Sotheby's will auction 15 works from the collection of Daniella Luxembourg, a prominent figure in the international art world for over 50 years, at its New York Contemporary Evening Auction in May 2025. The collection, titled 'Im Spazio: The Space of Thoughts,' pays homage to Germano Celant's 1967 exhibition considered the founding act of Arte Povera. It features post-war Italian and American artists including Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Alexander Calder, and Claes Oldenburg, with a total estimate exceeding $30 million. Highlights include Fontana's 'Concetto spaziale, La Fine di Dio' (1963, est. $12-18 million), Burri's monumental 'Nero Cretto' (1976, est. $2.5-3.5 million), Calder's 'Armada' (1945, est. $5-7 million), and Oldenburg's 'Soft Light Switches' (1963-69, est. $1-1.5 million). The works were mostly acquired in the early 2000s and were previously displayed in Luxembourg's New York home. A preview exhibition was held at Sotheby's Milan at Palazzo Serbelloni. Luxembourg, born in Israel, co-founded Sotheby's Israel in 1984, served as Chairman of Sotheby's Switzerland in the early 1990s, was president and co-owner of Phillips, de Pury & Luxembourg in the early 2000s, and founded her gallery Luxembourg & Co. in 2009, specializing in post-war and contemporary art.
