Daniele Toneatti’s Suspended Canvases at Peres Projects Milan

Peres Projects in Milan presents the first Italian solo show of Daniele Toneatti (b. 1989), a young Venetian artist. The exhibition features canvases suspended mid-air on invisible wires, allowing viewers to walk around them and inspect their backs—an arrangement that blurs the line between gallery and studio. The works are a patchwork of subjects, colors, and sources, ranging from caricatural lovers to characters from Charles Dickens mixed with toy weapons and pop culture stars. Toneatti also appropriates photographs from others, reworking them with romantic, soft brushstrokes reminiscent of Post-Impressionist and Fauvist painters like Matisse and Bonnard. This appropriation echoes the Picture Generation of the late 20th century, reflecting on media-driven visual trends. The chaotic creative assembly mirrors the layered composition of each painting, inviting prolonged inspection.
