Daniele Milvio Wins Competition for Public Art at Teatro alla Scala's New Tower

Daniele Milvio has won the competition to create a permanent public artwork for the new tower of Teatro alla Scala in Milan, designed by Mario Botta. The competition, launched by ARIA (Azienda Regionale per l’Innovazione e gli Acquisti) in early 2024, sought an artistic intervention for the facade of the building at Via Verdi 3. The work is required under Italian law 717/49, which mandates public art in certain building projects. Milvio's proposal, titled "Sipario," is a bronze bas-relief (102x319x18 cm) created using the lost-wax casting technique. It depicts a slightly open section of the Scala's curtain, symbolizing the connection between music and architecture. The jury, led by Paolo Besana and including Mario Botta, Roberta Sara Gnagnetti, Maurizio Cattelan, and Marzia Migliora, selected Milvio from over 60 submissions. Second and third places went to Nico Vascellari and Arcangelo Sassolino, with Gian Maria Tosatti also recognized. The winner receives €85,000 and has 180 days from contract signing to complete the work. Milvio (born 1988 in Genoa, lives and works in Milan) blends painting and sculpture, exploring the boundary between 2D and 3D. He has exhibited in Milan, Naples, London, Berlin, and New York. The tower, completed in late 2023, is part of the Scala's expansion and will house offices and an underground rehearsal hall.
