Daniele Girardi's Panta Rhei: A 160km Canoe Journey on the Adige River
Daniele Girardi (Verona, 1977) presented a selection of photographs from his last five years of wilderness residencies in the exhibition 'Everyday life. Economia globale e immagine contemporanea', curated by Gabriele Lorenzoni and Carlo Sala, organized by MART and held at Galleria Civica di Trento until September 1. His latest project, Panta rhei, involved a four-day, 160km canoe navigation from Verona to the Adriatic Sea along the Adige River, aiming for a poetic mapping of its course. Girardi used only a disposable camera and analog tools like paper maps and string, avoiding technology. The journey was not solo but with a friend, and faced challenges including a canoe puncture, extreme heat, insects, and quicksand. Luigi Spellini, vice president of Canoa Club Verona and head of the Adige via d'acqua project, provided logistical support. Girardi chose the name Panta rhei to emphasize the unrepeatability of each experience, and he refrained from social media to protect the present moment.
