Daniela Melzig's Light Paintings Merge Science, Performance, and Glass

artist · 2026-05-01

Daniela Melzig, born in Bielefeld in 1968, developed a unique artistic practice that integrates science, performance, and visual art, with glass as a defining medium. Her light paintings, first created in 1998, use translucent materials to capture fleeting moments and shift with perspective. Melzig's early work 'Einkehr' (Retreat), made during her studies in the Netherlands, established her technique combining performance and analog photography on antique glass. Influenced by Isadora Duncan, Georges Méliès, Marina Abramović, Camille Pissarro, Jan Vermeer, Picasso, and Galileo Galilei, she also draws from her background in chemistry and environmental technology. A severe childhood hip condition redirected her from ballet to drawing, shaping themes of memory and fragility. She participated in the collective 'the three monkeys' from 2017 to 2022 and was involved with the Moresnet Film Society in Belgium. Currently preparing for an exhibition in Madrid and a future solo show, she works under the name Transparent WORLDS®.
