Daniel Spoerri retrospective at CAP Carrara spans 40 years
A major exhibition of Daniel Spoerri's work opened on June 17, 2016 at the CAP-Centro Arti Plastiche in Carrara, Italy, running through September 11, 2016. Titled "Daniel Spoerri. Una dura scelta," the show features 40 works selected by the artist from major Italian collections, covering four decades of his career. The exhibition extends to the Aula Magna of the Accademia di Belle Arti and includes an outdoor route connecting the two venues. Curated by Luciano Massari with a critical text by Antonio d'Avossa, the show presents Spoerri's famous tableaux-pièges (assemblages of everyday objects glued to supports), bronze sculptures, and recent works. A highlight is "La catena genetica del mercato delle pulci" (2000), an installation made from objects purchased at flea markets worldwide. The exhibition also features 14 "Ultime Cene" (Last Suppers) — marble table/tombstones dedicated to historical figures from Ötzi to Marcel Duchamp, with a larger version depicting Christ's Last Supper. Spoerri, born in Galati, Romania in 1930, has worked as a dancer, theater director, and poet before turning to visual arts, and has been associated with Nouveau Réalisme, Eat Art, and environmental installations. A female version of the Last Supper piece is located in the sculpture park he founded in Seggiano in 1997.
