Daniel Senise Presents 'Todos os Santos' at Instituto Tomie Ohtake
Daniel Senise's exhibition 'Todos os Santos' runs at Instituto Tomie Ohtake until October 13, 2019. The show features a monumental new work and a collection of rarely seen or unpublished pieces involving photographic interventions. Curator Daniela Labra describes the ensemble as revealing an interweaving of languages stemming from Senise's pictorial thinking, unfolding discourses on memory, spatiality, representation, materiality, Western art history, and philosophy that define his post-painting. The large-scale work, measuring 5 by 3.66 meters, incorporates fragments of burnt matter collected from inside Rio de Janeiro's Teatro Villa-Lobos, which was destroyed by fire in 2011 and remains closed. Labra notes that in this piece, photography exits and the mirror enters as support, reflecting an inverted reality through charred remains. Other works, created between 2005 and 2019, feature photographs of spaces like the old Sorocabana Railway shed, Hospital Matarazzo, and locations in Bahia and New York, among others. These photos were taken or directed by Senise with collaboration from Mauro Restiffe, Caetano Dias, Tiago Barros, and Fernando Laslo. For the curator, layers of temporality overlap, configuring a discussion on the physicality of matter, representation, image, reality, and existence. The exhibition is located at Av. Faria Lima 201 and offers free admission.
