Daniel Richter Mid-Career Retrospective at Vienna's 21er Haus
A mid-career retrospective of German painter Daniel Richter (b. 1962) opens at the 21er Haus in Vienna, featuring 52 large-scale works. The exhibition, titled 'Lonely Old Slogans' and curated by Axel Köhne, traces Richter's evolution from abstract, high-contrast painting to a figurative style that filters contemporary myths, pop phenomena, and social critique. His work, marked by rapid figuration and an ironic edge, connects to early 20th-century German artists like Max Beckmann and Otto Dix while retaining a street art sensibility. The show previously appeared at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, Denmark, and will travel to the Camden Arts Centre in London. Richter, who still designs punk rock covers for his own label Buback in Hamburg, lives between Berlin and Hamburg and teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. The exhibition runs until June 5, 2017.
