Daniel Knorr's Laundry Project Reimagined at Galleria Fonti, Naples
At Galleria Fonti in Naples, Daniel Knorr presents a recontextualization of his 2019 Laundry project, originally created for Basel Unlimited. The exhibition features a Cadillac disassembled into 33 panels mounted on the first room's walls, and a Smart car reassembled as an idealized vehicle. Knorr, born in Bucharest in 1968, explores the ambiguous relationship between idealized objects and the mechanics of desire. The Laundry project used an automated carwash machine to create paintings, contrasting industrial purity with social contamination. In this exhibition, the conceptual approach is maintained but shifted toward a more painterly, ostensive focus, almost like a Byzantine iconostasis. The dichotomy of 'dirty' vs. 'clean' and 'idea' vs. 'desire' is presented as complex visual categories, fully accessible as objects and painted surfaces. The works feature bright colors reminiscent of light on soap bubbles and metallic car bodies. The exhibition was reviewed by Emanuele Leone, a Naples-born art historian and curator who studied under Amnon Barzel from 2003 to 2006.
