Daniel Hopp's 'Fictional Healing' at Kunsthaus Hamburg
Daniel Hopp's first institutional solo exhibition at Kunsthaus Hamburg, 'Fictional Healing', runs until May 24, 2026. The project engages with addiction and homelessness through collaborative filmmaking. Hopp worked with over forty participants, including people affected by addiction, to create film scenes based on their imaginations and memories. The multi-part video installation was produced in Hamburg, Berlin, and Munich. Hopp bought participants' time to interrupt cycles of procurement, asking what film scene they would create. The resulting videos blur fiction and documentary. Four short videos document interviews, while a central film reinterprets personal stories with amateur and professional actors. AI-generated images illustrate motifs from participants' stories. The exhibition architecture uses upended fences to echo the Drob Inn, a contact and counselling centre near Hamburg Central Station. A brass star commemorates participant Herby, who died during production. A performative gala evening will donate proceeds to Jugendhilfe e. V., supporting Drob Inn Hamburg. The exhibition is curated by Anna Nowak.
