Daniel Buren's Monumenta 2012: Excentrique(s) at Grand Palais
For the 5th edition of Monumenta, Daniel Buren will transform the Grand Palais in Paris from May 10 to June 21, 2012, with his installation 'Excentrique(s)'. Buren plans to reject the main entrance, redirecting visitors through a northern door to create a disorienting experience. He will construct a 4x4 meter corridor acting as a 'longue vue' leading into the nave. The installation features hundreds of colored plastic circles on steel frames, supported by about 1,500 black-and-white striped feet, creating a forest-like canopy. Under the dome, circular mirrored podiums will allow visitors to see reflections. The project integrates a restaurant and bookstore within the same aesthetic. Buren also plans a sound installation with color names recited in 37 languages via directional speakers, and a live camera feed projecting the exhibition into the café. The work emphasizes the in situ experience, with Buren insisting that the project only exists when seen. The installation must be assembled in seven days and dismantled in three or four.
