Daniel Buren's first permanent public artwork in UK unveiled at Tottenham Court Road station

other · 2026-05-05

Daniel Buren's first permanent public artwork in the United Kingdom, titled "Diamonds and Circles, works in situ," has been completed at Tottenham Court Road station in London. Commissioned in 2008 by Art on the Underground, the installation is part of a £500 million renovation led by Hawkins\Brown architects. The work integrates Buren's signature stripes with geometric shapes, covering vertical surfaces from the station entrances to the ticket hall, where two large sculptures echo the motif. Buren stated that while museums attract limited visitors, the subway reaches everyone, offering "a good dose of oxygen for the spirit." The station, used by over 150,000 people daily, also features over 900 square meters of mosaics by Eduardo Paolozzi, recently restored. Eleanor Pinfield, director of Art on the Underground, called the station a testament to the power of public art. A free Summer Art Map, launched July 4, guides visitors to 40 contemporary art stops across London.
