Daniel Buren's festive banners steal the show at Art Basel Miami Beach's Public section

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Art Basel Miami Beach's public art section, Public (formerly Art|Public), held in Collins Park opposite the recently reopened Bass Museum, is typically modest and serves mainly to allow gallerists to show clients works outside the convention center. This year, however, independent curator Philipp Kaiser curated a clean, direct outdoor show. Highlights include Daniel Knorr's metal object echoing the museum, Harold Mendez's cages, works by Frida Baranek and Yto Barrada, and especially 80-year-old Daniel Buren's striped signal festoons. The author argues that such temporary public art should embrace popular, festive, colorful language, as demonstrated by Buren and the recent Venice Biennale, rather than intellectual conceits.
