Daniel Buren is the sole artist for MITICO 2024 at Belmond hotels

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Daniel Buren is the only artist selected for the 2024 edition of MITICO, a project launched in spring 2022 by Belmond hotel group and Galleria Continua. The project invites international artists to create site-specific works at Belmond properties worldwide. Previous participants include Subodh Gupta, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Leandro Erlich, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Arcangelo Sassolino, and Loris Cecchini. For 2024, Buren's works are installed at six locations: Mount Nelson in Cape Town (inaugurated February for its 125th anniversary and during Investec Cape Town Art Fair), Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro, Hotel Cipriani in Venice (during the 60th Venice Biennale), La Residencia in Mallorca, Villa San Michele in Fiesole, and Castello di Casole in Tuscany. At Castello di Casole, Buren introduced three portals (circle, square, triangle) framing the landscape, titled "Sosta colorata per Castello di Casole" (visible until November 17, 2024). At Villa San Michele, he transformed the hotel bar's glass ceiling (formerly a small cloister) with primary colors, titled "Sosta colorata per Villa San Michele" (until September 30, 2024). Buren stated that the common thread is the beauty of each environment, and he approached each site without a preconceived idea, letting the space and light guide him. The production began in July 2023 and finished around December 2023.
