Daniel Brühl Stars in 'Becoming Karl Lagerfeld' Series on Disney+

The series 'Becoming Karl Lagerfeld,' available on Disney+, explores the rise of the iconic fashion designer in 1970s Paris. Produced by Gaumont, the show stars Daniel Brühl as Lagerfeld, who was chosen during the writing phase. The series focuses on specific years of Lagerfeld's life, depicting how the star was born. Brühl, who met Lagerfeld once during a photoshoot, describes the challenge of portraying a mysterious yet iconic figure without falling into caricature. He notes Lagerfeld's extreme contrasts: an intellectual passionate about Proust and German romantics, a pop culture icon, artist, photographer, illustrator, and businessman. The production used approximately 2,700 costumes, with 1,600 made from scratch. Costume designer Pascaline Chavanne aimed to evoke the atmosphere of Saint-Germain-des-Prés rather than replicate it exactly, highlighting the role of muses like Jacques de Bascher in artistic creation.
