Dane Mitchell to Represent New Zealand at 2019 Venice Biennale
New Zealand has selected Dane Mitchell (b. 1976, Auckland) as its representative for the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019. The exhibition, titled 'Post hoc,' is curated by Zara Stanhope and Chris Sharp and will be held at Palazzina Canonica on Riva dei Sette Martiri, a historic building of the CNR Institute of Marine Sciences hosting a national pavilion for the first time. Mitchell's work focuses on phenomena that no longer exist: lost words, extinct species, ghost towns, and destroyed artworks, blending spiritual tendencies with minimalism and conceptualism. Mitchell has participated in numerous international biennials, including Tarrawarra (2008), Busan (2010), Singapore (2011), Ljubljana (2011), Gwangju (2012), Liverpool (2012), and Sydney (2016). Other national pavilions for 2019 include Finland's Miracle Workers Collective, Austria's Renate Bertlmann, France's Laure Prouvost, Estonia's Kris Lemsalu, Lithuania's Nida Art Colony with 'Sun and Sea,' Scotland's Charlotte Prodger, and Hong Kong's Shirley Tse, promoted by M+ Museum designed by Herzog & de Meuron.
