Dancing with Myself: Self-Portraiture in Contemporary Art at Punta della Dogana
The group exhibition 'Dancing with Myself' opened on April 8, 2018, at Punta della Dogana in Venice. Curated by Martin Bethenod and Florian Ebner, it is a collaboration between the Pinault Collection and the Museum Folkwang in Essen. A first version was presented in Essen in 2016, but the Venice iteration includes 56 new works not shown in Germany. The show explores self-representation in art from the 1970s to today, featuring photography, video, painting, sculpture, and installations. It contrasts melancholy and vanity, ironic identity play and political autobiography, existential reflection and the body as sculpture. Artists include Claude Cahun, Cindy Sherman, Gilbert & George, Urs Fischer, Alighiero Boetti, and Maurizio Cattelan.
