Dancing with Myself: Identity Explored at Punta della Dogana
Punta della Dogana in Venice reopens with 'Dancing with Myself', a group exhibition curated by Martin Bethenod that explores identity through art from the 1970s to today. The show features around thirty artists, including Urs Fischer, Alighiero Boetti, Cindy Sherman, Urs Lüthi, Kurt Kranz, Bruce Nauman, Gilbert & George, Rudolf Stingel, Steve McQueen, Adel Abdessemed, and LaToya Ruby Frazier. The exhibition avoids narcissism, instead using the body as a means to examine politics, gender, and existential vanitas. Works are displayed in the bare spaces of Punta della Dogana, emphasizing the void around them. Fischer's melting wax statue, Boetti's self-portrait with evaporating water, Sherman's transformative self-portraits, Lüthi's mirror-like photographs, Kranz's universal anatomical details, Nauman's verb-gesture loops, Gilbert & George's macro-scale works, Stingel's photographic paintings, McQueen's video, Abdessemed's self-immolation, and Frazier's protest imagery are highlighted. The exhibition runs at Punta della Dogana, Venice.
