Dancing Around the Bride: Duchamp's American Legacy at Philadelphia Museum of Art

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The Philadelphia Museum of Art mounted 'Dancing Around the Bride,' an unprecedented exhibition exploring Marcel Duchamp's influence on four major American artists: composer John Cage, choreographer Merce Cunningham, and visual artists Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. Curated by Carlos Basualdo with Erica Battle, the show was structured around four sections—'The Bride,' 'Chance,' 'The Central Scene,' and 'The Chess Game'—highlighting the collective production economy that emerged in 1960s New York. French artist Philippe Parreno designed the scenography using plexiglass and light to create transparent, interconnected spaces. The exhibition featured Duchamp's 1912 painting 'Bride' surrounded by works from Cage, Johns, and Rauschenberg, alongside a stage for dance homages to Cunningham. Parreno described his approach as a 'mental choreography' avoiding didacticism. The show ran from October 30, 2012, to January 21, 2013.
