Dancer Emmanuelle Rizzo Creates Pregnancy Movement Diary
Emmanuelle Rizzo, an Italian professional dancer based in Munich, has developed 'Movement Pregnancy Diary,' a documentary and research project exploring movement for pregnant dancers. The project stems from her personal experience with motherhood after the birth of her daughter Una, and addresses the challenges of balancing a freelance dance career with parenting. Rizzo has worked with choreographers including Alessandro Sousa Pereira, Matteo Carvone, Emesey Nagy, Pedro Dias, and Karolin Stächele, and previously received the Bayer Stipendien Programm in 2022, which enabled her debut choreographic work 'Ewig' at Schwere Reiter Theater in Munich. The project focuses on developing a Floor Work technique adapted for pregnancy, inspired by the Continuum movement methodology, which emphasizes fluid, continuous motion and body connection. Rizzo aims to create accessible movement units for pregnant dancers, sharing exercises, reflections, and techniques. The Tanzbüro München has invited her to present initial research results at the symposium 'Tanz und Elternschaft' in September 2025, marking the institution's tenth anniversary. The documentary also engages with themes raised in Santa Nastro's essay 'Mamme nell'arte. Artiste e operatrici culturali nella sfida della maternità,' which examines parenting in contemporary art.
