award · 2026-04-20

Dutch photographer Dana Lixenberg received the 2017 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, a £30,000 award recognizing living photographers for specific bodies of work exhibited or published in Europe within the past year. The prize is organized by London's Photographer's Gallery in partnership with Deutsche Börse Group. Lixenberg won for her Imperial Courts (1993–2015) series, which documents residents of the Imperial Courts neighborhood in Los Angeles over two decades. This area was central to the 1992 Los Angeles riots following the beating of Rodney King by LAPD officers. Her project evolved into a web documentary exploring individual community stories. Lixenberg was chosen from a shortlist that included Sophie Calle, Awoiska van der Molen, and the duo Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs. Their works are displayed at the Photographer's Gallery in London until June 17.
