Dana Awartani's 'Standing by the Ruins' at Towner Eastbourne Recreates Gaza's Destroyed Hamam al-Sammara

exhibition · 2026-04-06

The solo exhibition 'Standing by the Ruins' by Palestinian-Saudi artist Dana Awartani is on display at Towner Eastbourne until 25 January 2026. A significant installation in the exhibition reconstructs Gaza's Hamam al-Sammara bathhouse, crafted from clay sourced in Saudi Arabia with the help of artisans from Riyadh. This piece remains incomplete to emphasize the fragility of cultural heritage. Awartani’s art explores the theme of cultural destruction, merging Islamic aesthetics with modern dilemmas. Another artwork, 'I Went Away And Forgot You...' (2017), is showcased at Goodwood Art Foundation, stemming from an invitation by Arnolfini. Collaborating with displaced craftspeople, she utilizes materials from Jordan, Syria, and India. Influenced by Edward Said, her future works will confront issues of genocide and cultural erasure. The exhibition also features photographs by Samuele Cherubini, Rob Harris, and Lisa Whiting Photography.
