Dan Simmons: Science Fiction as Hyperreality

publication · 2026-04-23

Dan Simmons, born in 1948 in Illinois, began writing in 1982 and authored cult novels such as The Terror (1989) and the four-volume Hyperion Cantos (starting 1989). He is among the few science fiction or fantasy writers who treat writing as an experience akin to the visual or conceptual hallucinations he invents. Consequently, his work has influenced many visual artists, as evidenced by the exhibition "Lee 3 (Tau Ceti Central Armory Show)" held at Villa Arson in summer 2003, which was directly inspired by the Hyperion series.
