Dan Flavin and Donald Judd's Maximalist Minimalism in Doha
The exhibition 'Dan Flavin | Donald Judd: Doha' at Al Riwaq Gallery in Qatar presents the largest showing of these artists outside the USA and their first joint presentation in over 20 years. Co-curated by Michael Govan, director of LACMA, and organized with Qatar Museums, the show strips Minimalism of its historical baggage, presenting Flavin's fluorescent light works and Judd's geometric sculptures in a 3600m² white cube. The layout, designed like a Venn diagram, highlights their individual contributions while revealing their dialogue on color, material, and space. Govan notes that the Doha context allowed a fresh perspective, free from Western art history narratives. Some of Judd's works, never before exhibited as a group outside his Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas, are shown due to the gallery's vast scale. The exhibition runs until 24 February 2024 and will not tour elsewhere.
