Dalton Paula's Afro-Brazilian Portraits at MASP

exhibition · 2026-04-24

MASP presents 'Dalton Paula: retratos brasileros', a solo exhibition of 30 paintings by Dalton Paula, curated by Adriano Pedrosa, Glaucea Britto, and Lilia Schwarcz. The show is part of the museum's biennial program dedicated to Brazilian Histories. Paula's portraits depict historically invisible Black leaders and personalities in Brazil, created through a process of biography selection and archival research. Recent works incorporate 22-karat gold leaf in the subjects' hair, referencing the sacred head in Afro-Brazilian traditions. Twelve of the paintings were donated by the artist to MASP in 2022. The exhibition runs until October 30, 2022, at MASP, Avenida Paulista, 1578, São Paulo.
