Dalloul Artist Collective launches in Beirut with Fawzi Baalbaki solo exhibition
This month, the Dalloul Artist Collective (DAC) was inaugurated in Beirut, featuring a solo show by Lebanese artist Fawzi Baalbaki entitled The Escape to Joy. Established by Dr Basel Dalloul, this independent initiative is dedicated to supporting artists from the MENA region and its diaspora. Unlike the Dalloul Art Foundation (DAF), which focuses on the preservation and research of Arab art, DAC aims to engage directly with the evolving art landscape by enhancing artists' practices. Located in the Stone Garden building, designed by architect Lina Ghotmeh, the collective reflects Beirut's intricate history through its hand-combed concrete façade. Baalbaki's exhibition showcases over 50 recent pieces that delve into his personal narrative, particularly his experiences in Paris during the 1980s, transitioning from realism to more abstract figural forms. Curated by his sons Ayman and Said Baalbaki, the exhibition also features a short film by grandson Ali Baalbaki and an interview with the artist conducted by Serwan Baran, where Baalbaki shares recollections from his youth and discusses his artistic journey. This exhibition exemplifies the intergenerational vision promoted by both DAC and DAF, solidifying their roles in the region's art community.
