Dallas Museum of Art Receives 540 Works from Charles Dee Mitchell Bequest

The Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) has been gifted 540 artworks from the estate of the late Charles Dee Mitchell, honoring a bequest he made in 2021. Mitchell, who passed away in 2025, was known for his emphasis on conflict photography and works on paper. During his lifetime, he donated 50 pieces, including Chapel, a 2019 creation by Francisco Moreno. Additionally, he supported the DMA's 2013 exhibition DallasSITES and bequeathed his East Dallas residence, which was recently sold to establish an endowment for works on paper. The bequest features pieces by artists like Earlie Hudnall Jr. and Patti Smith. In May 2026, an exhibition named Charles Dee Mitchell – Goodbyes are not forever showcased 300 works from his estate, benefiting various institutions, including the DMA.
