Dalí and Chanel: Art, Fashion, and a Riviera Romance

Salvador Dalí and Coco Chanel's friendship, which reportedly included a love affair, blended surrealist art with haute couture. After moving to Paris in 1926, Dalí—already a collaborator with Elsa Schiaparelli—was introduced by Chanel to theatrical costume design, jewelry, and perfume. In the late 1930s, Chanel invited Dalí to Villa La Pausa on the French Riviera, providing a studio where he created works including 'The Endless Enigma' (1938) and 'Apparition of Face and Fruit Dish on a Beach' (1938). Together they designed costumes for the 1939 ballet 'Bacchanale,' featuring eccentric elements like a hoop skirt covered in teeth and a men's ensemble with red lobsters—a symbol Dalí later reused. Dalí also collaborated with Duke Fulco di Verdura on jewelry such as 'The Eye of Time,' and designed the perfume bottle 'Essence of Dalí,' mimicking Chanel No. 5 with his own eyes and mustache. Dalí once said, 'Chanel’s originality was the opposite of mine… She has the best-dressed body and soul on Earth.'
