Daido Moriyama's First Major Latin American Retrospective Opens at IMS Paulista

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The IMS Paulista in São Paulo presents the first major Latin American retrospective of Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama from April 9 to August 14, 2022. Curated by Thyago Nogueira, the exhibition spans two floors and features over 250 works alongside a hundred publications and writings, tracing Moriyama's career from the 1960s to the present. Born in 1938 in Ikeda-cho, Osaka, Moriyama moved to Tokyo in 1961, where his grainy, high-contrast black-and-white photography challenged conventional documentary realism. The first floor highlights his early influences, including postwar masters Eikoh Hosoe and Shōmei Tōmatsu, and his involvement with the provocative magazine Provoke in 1969, which popularized the are, bure, boke style. A key work is his 1972 book Adeus, fotografia!, marking its 50th anniversary in 2022. The second floor covers his return to art-making in the 1980s after a creative crisis, featuring series like Luz e sombra and Memórias de um cão, along with his personal diary magazine Record. The exhibition includes a large library-table displaying his books for public reading. Admission is free with proof of COVID-19 vaccination, and masks are recommended.
