Dada Masilo's African 'Giselle' Debuts at Romaeuropa Festival

festival-fair · 2026-05-05

South African choreographer and dancer Dada Masilo presents her reimagined 'Giselle' at the Romaeuropa Festival in Rome, following her acclaimed reinterpretations of 'Swan Lake' (2013) and 'Carmen' (2014). The piece features eleven dancers plus Masilo herself, with original music by fellow South African Philip Miller, who previously collaborated with Masilo on William Kentridge's 'Refuse the Hour'. Kentridge also contributes drawings that accompany the performance. Masilo transposes the classic ballet's theme of forgiveness into a story of deception and suffering, using Western sounds and African rhythms to stage a vengeful dance against violence toward women. The performance runs from September 28 to October 1, 2017, at Teatro Olimpico.
