DACS Marks 40th Anniversary with Panel Series on Artist Rights at Shoreditch Arts Club

institutional · 2026-04-20

The Design and Artists Copyright Society (DACS) is launching a three-part panel series titled '40 Years of Artists' Rights' at Shoreditch Arts Club in June 2024. This program commemorates four decades since DACS was founded by artists and lawyers to advocate for fair pay and copyright protection. Over £240 million in royalties have been distributed by the organization to date. Panel discussions will address sustaining artist careers, collective action models, and the impact of technology on creative practice. Participants include independent curator Fatoş Üstek, artist Evan Ifekoya, researcher Kuba Szreder, and DACS CEO Christian Zimmermann. ArtReview serves as the exclusive media partner for the events, with editor Mark Rapport expressing support for the initiative. The first session on June 11 explores current UK artist conditions, featuring Charlotte Warne Thomas, Russell Martin from Artquest, and chair Henry Broome. A second panel on June 18 examines artist-led collectives, with Jonny Tanna of Harlesden High Street and Reema Selhi from DACS, chaired by Francesca Gavin. The final discussion on June 25 focuses on art and technology, including representatives from Serpentine Gallery Creative AI Lab and Arcual CEO Bernadine Bröcker Wieder, moderated by Fi Churchman. All events are free but require booking.
