Daan Roosegaarde's Spark lights up Pesaro sky with biodegradable fireworks

Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde's environmental installation Spark – Ritornano le lucciole debuted in Italy from March 22 to 24, 2024, at Parco Miralfiore in Pesaro, the Italian Capital of Culture 2024. The work used thousands of small biodegradable fireworks to create a poetic light show, previously seen in Tokyo, Bilbao, Aix-en-Provence, Madrid, Auckland, Jordan, Melbourne, London, and Leeuwarden. Roosegaarde described Spark as "a place of wonder that shows a new sustainable alternative to celebrate space and time," noting that Parco Miralfiore was the perfect location after searching in London and Auckland. The installation is part of the city's efforts to enhance the park, a historic site once part of Villa Miralfiore owned by Simone Bonamini, later passing through the Della Rovere, Medici, Lorena, and Albani families. Deputy Mayor Daniele Vimini stated that Spark added to the park's valorization, conveying the need to reclaim natural spaces and understand the harmony of "La natura della cultura." Roosegaarde's other works like Grow (agriculture) and Seeing Stars (the sky) similarly blend night, light, and environment.
