D. Day Exhibition at Centre Pompidou Explores Paradoxes of Contemporary Design

exhibition · 2026-04-23

From June 29 to October 17, 2005, the Centre Pompidou in Paris presented 'D. Day. Le design aujourd'hui,' which highlighted various aspects of sustainable development, including the MaP3 telecommunication tower, Lafuma's Sablier chair representing eco-design, graphic design through Emigre magazine, and culinary design from El Bulli. The exhibition, curated without a central theme, illustrated philosopher Gilles Lipovetsky's concept of a 'hypermodern' society. It proposed a transition in design focus from tangible objects to services, stressing the importance of perception and cognitive sciences. Critic Annick Bureaud raised concerns about the emergence of luxury products, contrasting Carlotta de Bevilacqua's lamps with solar cookers for developing nations. The event also showcased Kyoichi Tsuzuki's 'Souvenirs from Hell' and explored mobile phone culture through contributions from the Delaware collective and anthropologist Franco La Cecla.
