D'Annunzio's lovers' apartments reopen at Vittoriale

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone Riviera will exceptionally open the Clausura, the private apartments of poet Gabriele D'Annunzio's lovers Luisa Baccara and Amélie Mazoyer, on five dates: December 14 and 21, 2021, and January 11, 18, and 25, 2022, with a €2 surcharge. The rooms, located between the Officina and the Corridoio del Labirinto, have been closed to the public and retain original details like an open powder jar and toilet roll. Baccara, a pianist, and Mazoyer, a housekeeper nicknamed Aélis who kept a diary, shared a bathroom separated by a wooden door. After D'Annunzio's death on March 1, 1938, architect Gian Carlo Maroni expelled them. President Giordano Bruno Guerri aims to expand public access. The Vittoriale, built between 1921 and 1938 on Lake Garda, includes the Prioria, the ship Puglia, a mausoleum, an amphitheater completed in 2020, and a park voted Italy's most beautiful in 2012. It attracts 200,000 visitors yearly and hosts festivals.
