Czech Republic and Hungary Announce Artists for 2019 Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Czech Republic and Hungary have selected their representatives for the 58th Venice Biennale, running from May 11 to November 24, 2019. The Czech pavilion will feature 93-year-old artist Stanislav Kolíbal, a pioneer of Czech avant-garde art known for critically rethinking minimalism and conceptual art since the 1960s. His two- and three-dimensional works blur boundaries between painting, drawing, sculpture, and architecture, oscillating between illusion and reality. The exhibition, titled "Former Uncertain Anticipated," was chosen by a jury led by Adam Budak, commissioner for the National Gallery in Prague. Kolíbal's practice aligns with the Biennale's theme "May You Live in Interesting Times," which focuses on the blurred lines between invention and reality in the era of fake news. Hungary will be represented by Tamás Waliczky, an artist originally from Budapest, with the exhibition "Cameras – Imaginary Cameras and Other Optical Devices," curated by Zsuzsanna Szegedy-Maszák. The project explores the multiple roles cameras play in everyday life.
