Czech Art Scene Grapples with Feminist Suppression and Gender Politics in Post-Socialist Era

opinion-review · 2026-04-19

Despite the growing presence of women artists, feminism remains sidelined in Eastern European art. In 1993, the Czech publication Výtvarné umení released a special issue focusing on women in the art scene, featuring ten artists who distanced themselves from the "woman artist" label. From June 4–21, 1996, the Jan Frágner Gallery in Prague hosted the "Muzzle" (Náhubek) exhibition, showcasing six Czech and six German women artists, curated by Juliette Güthlein. The "Female Art" (Ženské umení) exhibition took place from April 6 to May 5, 1993. Additionally, male artists ridiculed femininity in the 1993 "Just Like Women" show, while "On the Body" in 1996 involved male artists painting on female models. Recently, institutions like MXM Gallery have started to represent women artists.
