Cyprien Gaillard's 'Retinal Rivalry' 3D Film Debuts at OGR Torino

exhibition · 2026-04-26

French artist Cyprien Gaillard (born 1980, Paris) presents his latest filmic work 'Retinal Rivalry' at OGR Torino, commissioned by OGR Torino and co-produced with Fondation Beyeler, Haus der Kunst München, French Ministry of Culture, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Sprüth Magers, and Gladstone Gallery. The title references the phenomenon of retinal rivalry, where the brain alternates between two different images shown to each eye. Shot in stereoscopy and viewed with 3D glasses, the installation uses large video projectors to create a sculptural experience. Curated by Samuele Piazza, the work explores identity, commemoration, urban life, and illusion. It is on view at Binario1 of OGR Torino until February 2, 2025. Piazza notes the collaboration began over two years ago, and Gaillard's practice examines 'ruins in reverse' (Robert Smithson). The 3D format follows Gaillard's earlier work 'Nightlife'. Piazza observes that many viewers treat the piece as a regular film rather than a sculpture to be navigated physically. OGR Torino's identity is complex and multiform, aiming to unite tech and contemporary art. Future 2025 projects will explore art and technological innovation while maintaining historical dialogue.
