Cy Twombly's Final Curated Exhibition at Collection Lambert

Cy Twombly passed away on July 5, 2011, at age 83. The exhibition at Collection Lambert in Avignon (June 12 – October 2, 2011) was his last personally curated show. It featured his lesser-known photographic works from the 1950s onward, alongside sculptures and photographs by Rodin, Carjat, Cameron, Brancusi, and contemporaries like Ruscha, LeWitt, Sherman, and Sugimoto. Twombly, born Edwin Parker Twombly on April 25, 1929, in Lexington, Virginia, studied under Pierre Daura, attended the Art Students League in New York (meeting Robert Rauschenberg), and later Black Mountain College (connecting with John Cage). His 1952 travels to Italy and Morocco were pivotal. The exhibition, supported by Éric Mézil, highlighted Twombly's photographic practice as a means to construct equivalents of sensations rather than document reality.
