Cy Twombly Foundation donates $500,000 for new diagnostic center in Gaeta
The Cy Twombly Foundation has donated $500,000 to the city of Gaeta, Italy, to establish a specialized diagnostic center within the former Monsignor Di Liegro hospital. The infectious diseases ward was reopened on March 24 due to the pandemic. In gratitude, the city will name the new center after Cy Twombly, who lived and worked in Gaeta for much of his life. Foundation president Nicola Del Roscio coordinated the donation with Gaeta mayor Cosmo Mitrano. The funds will purchase new-generation machinery and equipment. Del Roscio noted the foundation's prior commitments include supporting women victims of violence in America, a scholarship at the Whitney Museum for art restoration, poetry scholarships, and aid for unemployed art handlers. The foundation's international members—American, British, French, and German—quickly approved the Italian initiative. Del Roscio has previously supported Gaeta's cultural heritage: in 2018 he funded the securing and restoration of Porta Domenica, and in 2019 the restoration of Palazzo della Gran Guardia. Since 2014, he has been involved in rehabilitating a plot near the Monte Orlando Botanical Garden, expropriated after demolition of illegal structures.
