Cy Twombly and Tancredi Together in Milan
Tommaso Calabro, formerly of Nahmad Projects London, opened his new Milan gallery near the Duomo with a two-artist show pairing six works on paper by Cy Twombly with ten paintings by Tancredi Parmiggiani, including two previously unseen pieces. The exhibition, running through late November 2018, honors Venetian gallerist Carlo Cardazzo, who had shown both artists in Milan sixty years earlier through his Galleria del Naviglio. The show is staged in three rooms of a 19th-century building with red marble staircase, stucco decorations, frescoes, and inlaid wooden floors. Twombly's works from 1969–1970 feature his characteristic graphic marks, including Senza titolo (1969) with orgiastic swirls and the letters F-I-G-A, and Senza titolo (1970) evoking Mediterranean waves. Tancredi's pieces range from the early Senza titolo (1949), reflecting his shift to abstraction after encountering Mondrian's Neoplasticism, to Senza titolo (1959) featuring one of his first 'matti' creatures. The first room displays historic catalogues produced by Cardazzo, on loan from the Fondazione Cini and the Cardazzo family.
