Curators Daniel Baumann, Dan Byers, and Tine Kukielski discuss their unique approach to the 2013 Carnegie International.

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Opening on October 5, 2013, the Carnegie International at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh is curated by Daniel Baumann, Dan Byers, and Tine Kukielski. This event showcases 33 artists from 19 different nations, emphasizing specific contrasts rather than providing a broad overview. For almost three years, the curators have immersed themselves in the Pittsburgh arts scene, having maintained an apartment/event space in Lawrenceville since August 2011. To sidestep what they term 'the illustration trap,' the exhibition does not adopt a title or theme, instead highlighting works that stimulate both knowledge and enjoyment. Influences include the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg and the Modern Institute in Glasgow. The exhibition will be open until March 16, 2014.
