Curator Aneta Szylak Reflects on Architectures of Gender Exhibition at SculptureCenter in 2003

exhibition · 2026-04-19

From November 4 to June 8, 2003, the SculptureCenter in Long Island City, New York, hosted the exhibition Architectures of Gender. Contemporary Women’s Art in Poland, curated by Aneta Szylak, who is the Vice-President of the Wyspa Progress Foundation and a curator from Gdansk. This showcase included works by sixteen Polish female artists, such as Izabella Gustowska, Elzbieta Jablonska, and Katarzyna Kozyra. Szylak's vision was to interact with the center's industrial setting, examining themes of gender, masculinity, and sexuality through a female lens. Pieces like Jadwiga Sawicka's Numbers tackled political themes, while others utilized domestic tasks to express ambiguity, ultimately questioning the social constructs of gender and inviting viewers to reflect on their own identities.
