CURA: Container Intensive Care Units for COVID-19

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

CURA (Connected Units for Respiratory Ailments) is an open-source project by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota that converts shipping containers into intensive care units for COVID-19 patients. Each container holds medical equipment for two patients, including ventilators and IV supports, and can be connected via inflatable corridors to form compact clusters. The units are easily transportable by ship, train, or truck, allowing rapid deployment to hospitals worldwide. A prototype is being built with UniCredit's support and will be tested in a Milan hospital. The project builds on the team's prior collaboration on the Italy Pavilion for Expo Dubai 2020.
