Cult Australian Film 'Sample People' Returns After 26 Years with 4K Remaster at Sydney Opera House

The 2000 Australian film 'Sample People', featuring Kylie Minogue, Ben Mendelsohn, and Joel Edgerton, is set to return to cinemas after 26 years as part of the 2026 Strobe Film Festival at the Sydney Opera House. The film, written and directed by Clinton Smith and co-written by Peter Buckmaster, follows a group of young Sydneysiders navigating the party scene at the turn of the millennium. The screening on 4 September will feature a 4K remastered version, aiming to highlight the film's cultural significance, particularly its portrayal of the club scene in Sydney that has since been systemically erased. The film was initially a modest $60,000 project but expanded after securing funding from the South Australian Government, partly due to Kylie Minogue's involvement. Despite its all-star cast and ambitious narrative, the film was not a commercial success, partly due to distribution delays that saw it eclipsed by similar films like 'Human Traffic' and 'Go'. The re-release includes a new tagline, 'Where cool is deadly,' replacing the original 'Who says you can trust your friends?' The filmmakers note the film's themes of cultural sampling and identity remain relevant today, and the 1990s soundtrack, including Grinspoon and The Whitlams, adds to its nostalgic appeal. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Smith, Buckmaster, and producer Barton Smith.
