exhibition · 2026-04-27

Katsuhiro Ōtomo's cyberpunk masterpiece 'Akira' will be re-released in Italian cinemas on March 14 and 15, 2023, marking 35 years since its original 1988 debut. The screenings are organized by Nexo Digital's 'La Stagione degli Anime al Cinema' project, in collaboration with publisher Dynit and supported by Lucca Comics & Games. The film, based on Ōtomo's 1982 manga, cost approximately one billion yen and involved ten production companies. Set in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo devastated by World War III, it follows motorcycle gang members Kaneda and Tetsuo, who develop psychic powers and clash over opposing goals of destruction and peace. The March 14 screenings will feature the original Japanese with Italian subtitles, while March 15 will show the Italian-dubbed version. A list of participating cinemas is available on Nexo Digital's website.
