Cuba's Escuelas Nacionales de Artes: A Visionary Architecture's Struggle for Survival
The Escuelas Nacionales de Artes in Havana, designed by Ricardo Porro, Vittorio Garatti, and Roberto Gottardi, represent a landmark of organic architecture commissioned by Fidel Castro. Built on the former Havana Biltmore Golf Club, the complex was intended to train students from Latin America, Africa, and Asia in various artistic disciplines. Only Porro's schools of modern dance and plastic arts were completed and restored; the others were abandoned due to economic issues and the rise of Soviet Socialist Realism. Porro went into exile in France. The complex is a Cuban National Monument and on UNESCO's tentative list. Efforts to preserve it include the Comitato Vittorio Garatti in Italy and renewed ties with the World Monument Fund after a MoMA exhibition. Documentaries like "Unfinished Space" and "Un Sueño a Mitad" have spread awareness. The Havana Biennale has also used the site for performances and exhibitions.
