Cuarteto Quiroga Records Arriaga’s Complete String Quartets for Bicentenary

publication · 2026-05-08

To mark the 200th anniversary of Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga’s death, the Spanish Cuarteto Quiroga has released a new album titled "Arriaga – The Complete String Quartets" on Cobra Records, distributed by Naxos Deutschland. The ensemble recorded the three string quartets on gut strings to recreate the transparent, warm sound of the 1820s. Arriaga, born in Bilbao on 27 January 1806—exactly fifty years after Mozart and on the same day—composed these quartets at age 16. He died in 1826 just before his 20th birthday. The Cuarteto Quiroga, founded in 2003 and named after violinist Manuel Quiroga, is known for combining historically informed performance with modern precision. The album follows their earlier "Heritage" project exploring Goya-era Madrid. Upcoming concerts include dates in Pully (CH) on 6 October 2026, Herisau (CH) on 4 November 2026, Cologne (DE) on 25 November 2026, Riehen (CH) on 26 November 2026, and Salzburg (AT) on 26 January 2027 as part of Mozartwoche.
