Crystal Bridges Museum Expansion Opens June 6, Adding 114,000 Sq Ft

On June 6, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, will unveil a significant expansion crafted by Safdie Architects, which will introduce 114,000 sq ft, increasing the total campus area by 50% to the 134 acres established by Alice Walton in 2011. This over $100 million initiative includes 29,000 sq ft of new galleries showcasing works from artists such as Mary Cassatt, Theaster Gates, Jun Kaneko, and Kiki Smith, featuring 200 previously unseen pieces from the permanent collection. The expansion also encompasses new studios for ceramics and digital art, a community lounge, and the Ozark Discovery Canopy playscape designed by landscape architect Bryan Hanes. Last year, the museum welcomed over 800,000 visitors. All galleries have been updated with new lighting and color schemes. A forthcoming exhibition, Keith Haring in 3D (June 6, 2026–January 25, 2027), will highlight the artist's sculptural creations, clothing, masks, skateboards, boomboxes, and a painted 1963 Buick Special. Additionally, the Art Bridges Foundation, the museum's sister organization, operates a two-year Partner Loan Network program with around a dozen museums, including the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, each receiving $50,000 to support art and wellness programs aimed at elderly individuals and at-risk youth, with workshops conducted at Art Bridges headquarters in Bentonville.
