Crowdfunding launched to rebuild Pistoletto's Venus in Naples amid public skepticism

A fundraising campaign has been launched to restore Michelangelo Pistoletto's monumental Venus of the Rags in Piazza del Municipio, Naples, after it was destroyed by arson in July 2023. Mayor Gaetano Manfredi announced the initiative, framing the fire as an opportunity for growth and debate. The crowdfunding aims to raise €200,000, exceeding the €168,000 spent on the original installation. Many Neapolitans are skeptical, questioning why insurance did not cover the loss and whether funds would be better spent on local cultural heritage or road infrastructure. The fire was set by Simone Isaia, a 32-year-old arrested and charged with arson and destruction of cultural property. Manfredi defended the use of fire-resistant materials, noting that they only delay flames and that the fabric's softness had to be preserved. The original work had already faced public criticism before the incident.
