Crowdfunding campaign launched to save abandoned Castello di Sammezzano

A crowdfunding campaign has been launched on the French platform Ulule to save the Castello di Sammezzano, a Moorish-style castle near Florence that is one of Italy's most important examples of eclectic architecture but has been abandoned since the 1990s. The campaign is organized by Save Sammezzano, a grassroots movement formed by thousands of citizens, including economists, art historians, architects, and other professionals, who aim to establish a legal entity for the protection and public accessibility of the site. The castle, a private property, served as a luxury hotel from the 1970s to the 1990s and was previously a residence until the 1960s. It was used as a set for Matteo Garrone's 2015 film 'Il racconto dei racconti – Tale of Tales' starring Vincent Cassel and Salma Hayek, and more recently for Dolcenera's music video 'Ora o mai più (Le cose cambiano)'. The movement has gathered tens of thousands of supporters and a team of about thirty volunteers, but lacks legal recognition to undertake initiatives. The crowdfunding goal is €5,000 within about thirty days; as of the report, €1,846 had been raised.
